Senior Java Developers - Calgary Calgary, AB

Work through the object-oriented design and development phases of creating, enhancing and delivering Call Genie’s EVD™ (Enhanced Voice Directory™) solution that utilizes enterprise level Java, web, speech recognition and database technologies.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Ensure the effective and timely delivery of extensible, high-quality software systems that meet Call Genie’s and our customer’s business needs.

• Utilize development best practices, methodologies and standards throughout the development process.

• Work with Development Manager, Product Managers and Customer Implementation Leaders to gain understanding of customer requirements and features.

• Assist with the analysis and design of Call Genie’s commercial applications and translate them into proven Java based solutions.

• Plan development activities and provide estimates of efforts required to meet development and implementation objectives.

• Review peer code to ensure proficiency, effectiveness and conformity to standards and best practices.

• Code new applications, features, interfaces, automation tools, and maintenance changes.

• Develop and implement tools to assist with automating tasks, testing or enhancing productivity.

• Prepare system documentation and training material as required.

• Senior Developers may be required mentor and guide Intermediate and Junior Developers.

Education & Experience:

• College diploma or university degree in Computer Science, Software Development or Information Systems.

• 3 to 8+ years of in-depth experience in all phases of software development.

• Experience developing software products for commercial, multi-customer release versus internal, corporate/IT release a strong asset.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

• Demonstrated ability in object-oriented design, development and unit testing best practices (a development exercise will be used in the interview process to select the best candidates).

• Proven ability to plan, prioritize, provide up to date estimates, take ownership, find solutions, make decisions and get work done in a fast-paced environment in which priorities and direction may shift frequently.

• Good knowledge of software development best practices.

• Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills – ability to recognize and find solutions for generalized meta-problems not just specific short-term challenges.

• Able to constructively discuss and evaluate design alternatives in a team environment by drawing on a broad knowledge base, objective criteria and best practices.

• Sound, practical understanding of iterative, agile development processes and practices such as Scrum, Crystal, XP or Agile RUP.

• Exposure to test driven development using JUnit, CruiseControl, MockObjects, etc.

• Practical hands-on experience with enterprise-grade development projects using Java, JSP, J2EE application servers, Servlets, Struts, and associated tools.

• Solid experience with relational database design and development using Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL and developing advanced search algorithms.

• Understanding of XML document processing (VXML, XML, XSD, XSLT) and XML to Java integration (JAXB/JAXP, Castor, XStream).

• Familiarity with Hibernate, RMI, Tomcat, JBoss, or Websphere.

• Exposure to speech/voice recognition and speech synthesis would be an asset.
